Upcoming BIDS 1.7.? would advise to use top level rawbids/ for BIDS raw dataset (only). sourcedata/ could be used for anything, including non-bids data used in the study or for producing any given BIDS dataset. In derivatives and studies, it could also contain other derivatives as sourcedata used for them.
