PDF image loading fails silently in Chrome

Loading a PDF image using the loadImage() method works in Safari on a Mac, but fails in Chrome. This is expected as Chrome does not support inline PDF images. However, it would be nice for debugging purposes if some error message was printed to the JavaScript console. A script a friend of mine wrote worked well on her computer, but failed on mine (hung in the "Loading..." stage), and we spent a long time trying to debug it before figuring out the problem.
