getknit maintains two pieces of free software.

Knit is an offline messenger for Android. Phones talk straight to each other over Wi-Fi Aware and Bluetooth LE, running both radios at once, and relay for one another hop by hop — no internet, no cell service, no accounts, no phone numbers, no Google Play services. Direct messages and group chats are end-to-end encrypted with forward secrecy. It's GPL-3.0-or-later, on Google Play and on F-Droid, where it's a reproducible build: F-Droid rebuilds it from source and byte-compares the result against our release before shipping it.

knit-spool is the reference relay for Knit's optional Internet plane, for the people who aren't in radio range. It holds sealed frames for scope ids it cannot map to anyone, and forgets everything else. AGPL-3.0-or-later.

Neither has ads, tracking, telemetry, or anything to sell you. There's no paid tier and no hosted service, because the mesh has no server to put one behind.

What sponsorship actually pays for: test phones, the VPS behind the public spool, the domain, and CI minutes. Mesh bugs don't reproduce on one device or in an emulator — half of what I fix only shows up with four phones in four rooms, and Wi-Fi Aware is undocumented exactly where it matters.

Tips buy no special treatment. Knit stays GPLv3, knit-spool stays AGPLv3. A good bug report, a public spool, or telling one person the app exists helps as much as money does.

Knit mesh is powered by you. Ten regular sponsors would cover the recurring bills: the optional relay server, the getknit.app domain and the developer fees. Past that, the money buys used phones for the test lab. Every release runs on real radios before it ships, and phones that can do Wi-Fi Aware aren't cheap.
