Inactive Account Cleanup Suggestions

On the 28th of November the new inactive account cleanup cron job ran the first time and deleted 150 users that had 0 heartbeats and did not login for 30 days.

This may sound harsh, but it is to prevent spam accounts and people that just create an account and never come back.

I was thinking about this, and maybe it’s not the best solution. Do you guys have any idea how this could be improved?

1 Year no login + no activity? Or also check if the user decided whether to take part in the leaderboard which would be at least an interaction after creating the account.

Anyways, I don't think it's the proper way. I mean, it's totally fair on your end! We're using a free service. However, I honestly forgot about Ziit, which is why I haven't used it. I tend to reset my pc more often than not, to get a clean slate 😅

What I think you should have done instead, is having the job running monthly is fine, but if the user haven't showed a heartbeat in the past 30 days, send them an email asking to login to keep their data, if not logging in within 30 days, you can assume they don't want their data 🙌

To take this out of a tangent, you are fully compliant with GDPR here, which states that data must be stored for the shortest time possible 😂

Hi! Thanks for reaching out, I would love to give you a real life example, it may help. I have used ziit for keeping track of my work hours, which has helped me calculate my profits while I was a freelancer. I have scince moved on and work on other projects now, so I don't use it anymore. I think in the most cases the users of ziit either want to see their time spent on their projects for fun, or they actually use/used it for their work. The most optimal way in my opinion to deal with this would be to send out emails, as a heads up to either "renew" their accounts, or if they do not use it anymore it will automatically get deleted after x months. It would also be good to have a way to save that data if the person needs it, but doesn't intend to use ziit anymore. This way the actual users or people that might need their data don't lose it. This renew logic would also filter out the data of the people that use this service once just for fun. Hope i could help, wish you the best!

Ok, I may have to clear the confusion here. Accounts do NOT get deleted if they have at least 1 heartbeat it only applies to accounts with 0 heartbeats and 30 no login which would only apply to those that did not interact with ziit in any way after signup or spammers.

I signed up just to demo the product and see if it had the stats I was looking for. You might consider creating a read-only demo account with fake data, using “demo” as the username and password. Showing that info on the login page would help prevent stale accounts from people who just want to test the product.

Hearken well: I do propose that we dispatch a missive unto those subscribers who have lain dormant, entreating them most earnestly to make entry unto their ledgers within a time prescribed, lest their accounts be struck from our records and cast into oblivion.
