The XLSForm could not be converted: [row : 29] On the 'survey' sheet, the 'calculation' value is invalid. Reference variables must contain a name from the 'survey' sheet. Could not find the name 'FOO'.
It turns out I had used ${FOO} in a choice filter when I should have used FOO. I couldn't figure out what "reference variables" meant in this context.
Here's proposed wording: ${FOO} refers to a field named 'FOO', but no such field exists on the 'survey' sheet.. I think that would have helped me search for ${FOO} which would have led me right where I needed to be.
A perhaps simpler change depending on how the parts of the error are built up would be The ${FOO} reference must match a field name from the 'survey' sheet.
Side note that's not actionable now: In this case I was very lucky that my form doesn't have a field named FOO so that I got this error. When there's both a secondary instance node and a form field with the same name it's a really hard mistake to troubleshoot.
