Hey y'all, creator of Spider here!

As you've maybe noticed, this project isn't very actively maintained. The main reason for this is that I no longer have a use for this anymore. I made this to be a clean (maybe even pretty!) way to install web apps on Linux, but that was before using the "Install app..." feature for PWAs in Chromium-based browsers. Granted, this has limitations if the web app doesn't explicitly provide a PWA manifest (cough cough SLACK), but that has workarounds at times. Simply put, you get better security, performance, start-up times, and extension support from something that's already built into a browser.

So here is my question to the people who use this:

What about Spider is better than installing PWAs via a Chromium-based browser?

Maybe a little more directly - why do you use this?

I running llama.cpp for local inference. I prefer its own web-ui over separate apps like Newelle. From all the web app creators I tested this one is the best one. (One reason for this is that apparmor prevents generation of different browser profiles on my OS.) It looks very well integrated into the desktop, like a normal app.

My use case is not having a chromium based browser installed and firefox pwa not really function well. Plus the customization with icons makes everything look very clean.

There has been a bug with PWA, if you are using flatpak chrome+Wayland, the PWA doesn't take its icon, instead merges with already running instance of chrome.
The fix has been merge for that, but it will take sometime to release.

The PWA doesn't integrate in the system well and its window decorations are completely different from a native app. (I have created an issue for that).
