We need to incorporate a tray icon for the program, and I think one great option is surfatwork's netctl Gnome Shell applet. While this will only satisfy it on Gnome, it will take a bit of coding work away from us.

For the tray icons that are not Gnome Shell, we should look into other methods. How will we get it on Cinnamon, Fluxbox, Pantheon, Awesome, i3, etc...
This will satisfy item 1 and 6 on the wish list.
*note: I am only familiar with Gnome 3 and it's derivatives. I have no idea if Fluxbox, Awesome, i3, etc... can even use tray icons.
