I was wondering if by any chance you tried with an esp32? or esp8266 as the tower, makes more sense since it can be placed somewhere else

I haven't tried myself yet. But this should be doable as their clock is at least ×8 as fast.

Placed elsewhere as in you'd like to talk serial with it via BT or WiFi? Sounds more complex but could still work.

I am trying to build it, i just have some doubts in terms of the overall implementation, i have an RCX2.0 and according to the specs I read, it communicated at double the speed 76khz, I noticed in your frontpage image you also have an rcx2.0, i was wondering if you used the stock firmware and it worked with the 38khz speed.

IIRC the RCX2.0 is downwards compatible and should work with both carrier frequencies and also the lower baud rates.

If you want a guaranteed working solution, you might want to buy a cheap LEGO IR serial tower + USB/serial cable. Or try to adapt the ESP* to the serial port of the tower instead and work wireless from there.
