- I love exploring the world around me and am captivated by asking “why.” I am not satisfied by simple answers; I love challenges and approach each new problem as a puzzle waiting to be solved.
- Throughout my PhD, I studied Protein Arginine Methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5), a cell-essential protein that is often over-expressed in cancer and thus a target of multiple clinical-stage chemotherapies. I discovered that PRMT5 is required for histone protein regulation, potentially by mediating a direct feedback loop via methylation of non-nucleosomal histone H4. This discovery redefines PRMT5 as a central regulator of histone homeostasis and provides a mechanistic basis for understanding its essential role in proliferating cells. By directly linking arginine methylation to histone production, I offer a new framework for understanding how PRMT5 inhibition induces genome instability and explain why PRMT5 is critical for cancer: rapidly dividing cells require over-expression of PRMT5 to drive production of histones.
