disclaimer: I am new to 3d mice (borrowed an official one once before,) and this issue is likely due to my lack of practice...
That said, the spring has an inherent handedness, different tension/return strength depending on which way you twist it. Also all other moves make it twist a little, since any stretching of any or all of the 3 springs causes a twist as well, (especially vertical push/pull). The main thing for me is how different twisting left vs right feels.
I tried just printing 2 springs at half thickness and mirroring them, which felt a little better for 2 seconds before the thin springs got mangled. I'm willing to try to design a new symmetrical spring, but wanted to know if anyone else has come up with a solution, before I go down that rabbit hole.
We have some vertical space inside the knob, especially with a shorter/slimmer/tapered post, and/or the redesigned knob/magnet holder that other users have made. (will probably use Akira28hk's mod for testing lots of springs, anyway) Any suggestions?
