Signs mobile app that makes learning sign language accessible to everyone through an interactive dictionary and structured, bite-sized lessons. Built with React Native by a team of two.
Most language learning apps focus on spoken languages, leaving sign languages underserved despite millions of users worldwide. Signs bridges that gap by offering a mobile-first learning experience built around two core pillars:
- A visual dictionary: search any word and instantly see how to sign it, with clear demonstrations and descriptions.
- Structured lessons: progress through curated lessons that build vocabulary step by step, from everyday greetings to full conversational signing.
The goal: make sign language as easy to start learning as any spoken language.
-
Sign Dictionary:
- Search signs by keyword or browse by category
- Detailed descriptions of hand shape, movement, and placement
- Favorites system to save signs for quick review
-
Interactive Lessons:
- Progressive lesson paths organized by difficulty
- Multiple exercise types: recognition, matching, and recall
- Progress tracking
- Completion streaks to keep learners motivated

Why React Native? We chose React Native to ship a single codebase to both iOS and Android, letting a two-person team move fast without sacrificing native performance. Its component model also maps naturally to our lesson and dictionary UI, which is highly reusable across screens.
